HOW DOES LIFE COACHING WORK?

Updated: Apr 21, 2021

Working with a life coach can bring you successful results. With the right coach you will see improvements in your self-confidence, you will develop a healthier self-esteem and you will create purpose in your life.

There are a number of steps you will go through when working one on one with your coach. The first step in coaching is defining your aim of the session and gaining clarity on your vision. Using a specific structure and format, your coach will help you by asking you specific questions, and then creating a custom action plan that will best suit what you’re looking to achieve. Some questions you can expect a coach to ask are:

  • What is it that motivates you?

  • What is it that you’d like to achieve by the end of our session today?

After answering the questions your coach sets out for you, you’ll work alongside your coach to identify any obstacles and limiting beliefs that have been holding you back. You will continue to explore questions such as:

  • What negative thought patterns have been holding you back?

  • How have these patterns impacted you and how can you move past them?

After exploring all the right questions with your coach, you and your coach will create achievable goal setting. Your coach will help you determine your long and short term goals while making sure that they are aligning with your core values. You will then work on creating a plan of action and decide when and how you will commit to the action steps.

Your coach will always be there to hold you accountable and to encourage you through every step of the way. If obstacles arise along the way, you will receive the tools and techniques to help you cope with them. Your coach will frequently assess what is working well and what isn’t with the action plan so that if any modification needs to be made, it can be done accordingly. This will ensure constant success and motivation!

Overall, coaching is a fun and challenging process. Patience, consistency and trusting the process of coaching will be important in determining the success of your achievements. If you’re ready to set goals and pave your own path with help along the way, coaching is right for you.

LIFE COACHING FAQ

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LIFE COACH AND A THERAPIST?

Many people believe that life coaching and therapy is the same thing, but in reality it is its own unique service. Both counselling and life coaching provide positive, valuable and life changing results! Life coaching is designed to help ambitious achievers meet the outcomes that will bring them happier and healthier futures. Here are some of the differences between life coaching and therapy:

  • Coaches focus on the present and the future. Therapists focus on the past and how it affects the present.

  • Coaches use an action based approach. Therapists use a talk-therapy approach.

  • Coaches help you understand obstacles and problematic behaviours in order to create an action plan. Therapists diagnose and focus on past traumas to help change destructive habits or work through painful feelings.

Some similarities between the two are:

  • Both desire to make positive changes in your emotional state and life.

  • Both help you understand how the past affects the present.

  • Both work to understand self-limiting beliefs or problematic behavior caused by thoughts and emotions that you may not be aware of.

  • Both are eager in helping you grow, change and master your emotions.

In life coaching, a client works with a coach in order to clarify goals and identify obstacles and problematic behaviors with the goal of creating action plans to achieve desired results. The process of life coaching is goal-oriented and action based throughout the whole process. A life coach enables the person receiving treatment to take control of their life and take action to steer it toward success.

Q: HOW DOES LIFE COACHING ENSURE CONFIDENTIALITY?

What happens in your coaching sessions stays in the sessions at all times. Coaching provides a safe space and is a totally judgement free zone. A life coach values your trust, and will be sure to take every precaution to protect it.

Before the start of your initial session, your coach will provide you with a consent form that will have a detailed description of the ethical code that governs every client-coach relationship entered. This will ensure that you both agree to the confidentiality agreement.

Q: HOW OFTEN WOULD I MEET WITH MY COACH?

Usually a coach meets with clients once a week. Through many years of experience and testing of different time frames, we’ve found that this frequency creates the most success. Meeting once a week offers time for reflection and the application of learning between sessions, while maintaining the momentum of working with the coach.

Q: WHAT DOES A LIFE COACH DO?

A life coach encourages and counsels clients on a range of professional and personal issues. You hire a coach to aid you with specific professional projects, personal goals and transitions.

A coach will help you identify limiting beliefs and other potential challenges and obstacles that stop you from reaching your full potential. After discussing all necessary measures to achieve your goals, you and your coach will develop a custom plan of action specifically designed to meet your unique desired goals.
